Is Gulen a scholar or spy?

Fethullah Gulen, former imam, preacher, and author, is the Gulen Movement’s leader. He is accepting of an ‘Islamic thinker’ by his supporters.

Fethullah Gulen was born on April 27, 1941 in Turkey’s eastern city, Erzurum. He continued his education until 1959 and he was imam for four year before his military duty. After military duty, he worked in different Turkish cities between 1963 and 1971.

He was arrested on May 5, 1971 with the military junta leaders and was released on November 5, 1971. He continued to be a preacher after he was released and he wrote stories for some magazines until 1980. Capture the decision for Gulen after September 12, 1980 and he left in his preacher duties in 1981. He continued his activities until 1992.

He meet with politicians and religious people in the 90’s and gave interviews. He left Turkey on March 1999 on medical grounds.

Some have accused him for wanting to make Turkey a sharia country.

A lawsuit was filed against Fethullah Gulen in 2000 and continued until 2008.


The Gulen movement was organized under civil society with religious doctrines. They spread around world with schools and foundations, especially in Turkey.

Community first looks like moved to Turkish culture and language to different nations. But community activities took people under effect and started orientation.

This orientations by community turned against governments in different countries.


Fethullah Gulen and the Gulen Movement first provided its support to the AK Party government and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. But on this way, organization continued its activities with schools and foundations. And who had communication with these schools, entered with high points to goverment buildings. Community organized especially in police academy and courts.

On this way appeared community activities in Gezi Park events. Investigations emerged regarding new spying activities by this movement.

Listening devices were found in cabinet ministers and high degree military commanders offices. Illegal phone listenings appeared and changed voice records and lawsuits with fake evidence against former commanders, politicians and civil societies.

One by one, the operation by the Turkish security forces and courts against Gulen movement members conintued under ‘parallel state investigation’. This operation showed new spying activities and capture the decision for Fethullah Gulen.

Some opposite groups  that are against Turkish government, took places near Gulen movement against these operations. Who is blamed Gulen before with ‘sharia country’, entered in this groups inside.


Gulen movement was shocked to all Islamic groups with their ‘curse sessions’. Community moved these sessions to Mekka for Haj time.

This curse sessions made reactions against movement and also many community supporters left the movement after these events.


Gulen Movement took places and leaked to governments in the same way in Balkan countries. Albania, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Reports said the movement was strong, especially in Albania. But it continued to lose supporters everywhere.  Bosnia-Herzegovina is a country where the movement had activities against SDA and President Bakir Izetbegovic. The strongest reason against Izetbegovic was his support for Turkish President Erdogan.

Same reports showed that the movement supported former Reis-ul Ulema Mustafa Tseric against Bakir Izetbegovic during the presidential elections.  Also, they supported Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu in Turkey against Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

This means the movement lost two elections, in Turkey and Bosnia-Herzegovina.


The United States government’s silence continued against the decision about Fethullah Gulen. On this way, American journalist William Engdahl’s report shocked everyone. He claimed the Gulen Movement schools were founded by the American Intelligence Community.

He said the “Gulen community one of most dangerious thing for Republic of Turkey and Europe.”
